Green aging

Today's photo comes from Green Aging in Place, which is about aging in place (a concept which simply means aging at home) and also about being green. Well, Robert and I are certainly aging (rapidly!) at home and we recycle, so naturally we had to re-create this photo.

Here we are re-creating the photo with our huge City of Hollywood recycle bin. Since last May, we've been part of a program called Recyclebank, where we get points for how much we recycle, which can then be redeemed for prizes. So far, we've accumulated 2,227 points. When we reach 2,500 points we'll be able to get a $10 Home Depot card. Yippee!

Here's the original photo. According to Green Aging in Place, the aging population and the "green movement" are two mega-trends for the 21st century. Gee, who knew we were so with it?

You crack me up with your comments. Interesting about the points, how do they determine when/how you get points? Unlike Miami where we all had curbside trash pickup, up here everyone takes their own trash/garbage to the Transfer Station (previously called The Dump); there we can re-cycle just about everything into the proper bins. In fact, crushed glass can be used in asphalt, thus making the town money.

Here in Miami we have a garbage bin picked up twice a week, and also a recycle bin which is picked up twice a month. We receive a calendar showing the dates of the pickup of recycle. We do not get any points - that's neat. You do find the most interesting re-creations and I too love your comments. Keep them comin

We have to pay extra to recycle here - so instead I try to reduce waste and bring some recyclables to work. I knew recycling was a trend, but who knew aging was too! I guess all the cool kids are doing it.

Your recycling bin is awesome. I need one that big!

Wow, you both look so much better than the original photo, LOL!
We get our recyclables picked up every other week, but no points or gifts. We don't have a huge bin like your's, but we do have 4 bins. John reads a lot of newspapers & publications, LOL.

Molly, they determine how we get points by some sort of technology on their trucks and on our recycle bin. The whole thing is automated - the truck picks up our recycle bin, reads the code that's embedded in it, weighs it, decides how many points we get, and sends us an email telling us we've got points. We can also see our entire history on the "my account" section of their website. They pick up twice a month and we usually get about 80 points or so.

You always look better than the original models. You really need to go pro.
How nice that you can recycle from your curb. I have to drive 20 miles round trip to recycle. Possibly the gas I burn defeats the purpose.

I think this is very funny and charming! Keep at it!

wow, the point system for recycling - kudos to Hollywood, Florida for such an innovative recycling program; sounds like it's really working well there; + you don't even have to live in Mendocino county to reduce your carbon footprint ! (i'm sending a link to your blog to my friends ron + pam…..i enjoyed all the comments from everyone re. their recycling programs across the country……we now have 'mixed' recycling bins in Brookline…….glass + paper + plastic all in one bin; but we don't have the point system !

I read an article once about a woman who was so green she filled her garbage can only once a year. It was even back before recycling bins, so I remain baffled as to how she accomplished that. Even a yearly supply empty toilet paper rolls and wrappings would fill a can wouldn't they?

I appreciate the introduction from Patti! I've now had great wandering through your past posts. The recreations of old photos are so clever. Love the jumpers!
